What is Viagra? How does it work?

Viagra is one of the PDE5 inhibitors that help men to achieve an erection. This drug received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 27 March 1998. This ED med is popularly known as the little blue pill. The generic name of this drug is called Sildenafil. This medication works by relaxing the muscles in the penile region. This enables better flow of blood in the penile region which helps a man get an erection or maintain one for sexual intercourse.

This drug does not provide any protection against sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, syphilis, AIDS, or hepatitis B etc. You must take proper precautions to keep yourself safe from such diseases.

Also, you should note that this medication only works in combination with sexual stimulation. In the absence of sexual stimulation, you won’t get an erection even after taking this drug.

How should this drug be consumed?

This drug must be used as per a doctor’s instructions. Take the doses as prescribed. Never consume it in large amounts.

  • ·         This medication is for oral administration that you can take irrespective of your meal time. However, you should note that the effects may take some time but will remain the same if you use it after having your meal.
  • ·         You can take the drug 30-60 minutes before sexual activities. Do not use it more than once in a day.
  • ·         Take the drug with a glass of water. Do not use any products that have sedative effects with this drug such as alcohol.
  • ·         Inform your doctor about the treatments or medications you are taking currently.
  • ·         Avoid consuming grapefruit, grapefruit products, street drugs, ED medications such as Tadalafil and Vardenafil or other medications that contain the ingredient Sildenafil while using this medication.
  • ·         You should tell your doctor about your entire medical history before using this drug.
  • ·         If you were asked to refrain from sexual activities before by your doctor due to health problems, you should not take this drug.
Note: This medication is not safe for use anybody less than the age of 18 years.
