  • Nitration with fuming nitric acid.
  • Cyclization
  • Reduction of a nitro group to amino group.
  • Acylation with 2-ethoxybenzoyl chloride.

Before understanding that how Viagra works or what is the mechanism behind the working of Viagra it is very important to understand the erectile function in men. Sildenafil enhances the effect of NO by inhibiting Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which is responsible for degradation of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum. The sexual stimulation releases nitric oxide in the corpus cavernosum. The release of nitric oxide activates the enzyme guanylate cyclase which results in the increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate responsible for the penile erections.

In simple words, we can say that Viagra increases the blood flow to the penile nerve which results in an erection.  It allows to maintain an erection during the sexual activity.

  • Diabetes patient should avoid Viagra as it can increase the glucose in the blood, which may results to high blood sugar
  • Kidney or liver problem should take Viagra after consulting with the doctor
  • Any bleeding or disorder like hemophilia
  • Disease of blood called sickle cell anemia
  • Stomach ulcer, viagra may cause bleeding inside the stomach
  •  Color vision problems, it may lead to loss of vision or blurred vision
